Movie Trends and Loss of Inspiration

(Photo Credit: Dina Goldstein - check out her work now!)

Now this isn't exactly rocket science but it suddenly dawned on me today while humming away and copying my new favorite television series to an external (to hook up to my boyfriend's awesome television for an indulgent day of procrastinating) that there is actually a major trend happening concerning one particular character in the series. And I suddenly remembered how unpopular of a character she is in my rankings because of course everyone always prefers Belle or Ariel or Jasmine more so than Cinderella or the character of the year - Snow White.

Snow White is everywhere. Possibly because Cinderella has been overdone to death and not much can really be done with Belle or Ariel (or any of the other Disney princesses for that matter) without everyone preferring them in their original form: Disney. Cartoon. Innocent (as much as bestiality and being an overly sheltered half-fish can be innocent).

I find it somewhat annoying that we have obviously run out of original movie ideas (at least television shows are still surviving...albeit a reality show about "pawn shops" is a little concerning) but do we have to adapt original works and make a big flop of it all?

Not that I particularly like Snow White or care about her image (I know, I'm heartless but she doesn't cut it for me) but I still think having two movies in one year about her is terrible. Especially when on one end you have Mirror Mirror which is obviously "kiddie" and then on the other you have Snow White and the Huntsman (which personally makes me think of a big, huge spider...) which is more "adult" and along the lines of the Alice in Wonderland dark remake. A lot of people are saying the latter (big spider version I mean, not Alice) is the winner out of the two and after attempting to watch the trailer for Mirror Mirror and being unable to watch the entire thing (a trailer!) I'd have to admit my Snow White movie choice of the year is big, huge spider version.

Leaving the movies for now (somehow I'm not sure either will really live up to my expectations considering how movies have been lately), if you have yet to see Once Upon a Time you really should invest some time on it if you're looking for a change from vampires and werewolves and stupid reality shit. It's a nice twist on fairy tales with the main character being Snow White however it is definitely not all about her. It's not at all kiddie but dark and full of unrequited romance and heartbreaking moments and everything you'll need for a Friday night spent indoors alone.

What does everyone think of the current Snow White obsession? Think this is something that will keep going until we exhaust all preexisting characters?

I love Once Upon A Time. But I do think the whole "multiple Snow White" movies thing is quite annoying. I think the whole Grimm and OUAT TV shows sparked these movies to come out at approx similar times. But that is just my theory.
